GERRARDSTOWN – When Louie Talbott looks at the landscape in Berkeley County, he, like many people, no longer sees sprawling farms everywhere. Instead, the local farm owner sees more and more developments popping up where farms used to be. While Talbott can’t control what is being done with other farmland in the area, he recently made sure his farm, located right next to his parents’ farm in Gerrardstown, will forever be protected by obtaining a deed of conservation easement through the Berkeley County Farmland Protection program. The decision to buy the land and then protect it was a no-brainer for Talbott, whose family has owned farmland in the southern end of Berkeley County for over 100 years.
